In a recent U.S. study it was found that 25% of all dogs were overweight or obese. This statistic concerns us, because obesity can lead to such serious health problems as diabetes, heart disease, respiratory and skeletal problems. If those few extra pounds you were going to take off your dog this summer didn't come off, here are some suggestions that may help.

1. Feed a diet with decreased fat and increased fiber. (Since switching foods can cause stomach upset, do it gradually.)
2. Stop feeding table scraps and avoid fattening treats.
3. If treats are part of your daily routine try carrots or treats designed for weight loss management.
4. Instead of feeing one large meal, try several small meals throughout the day.
5. Implement an exercise program that is enjoyable for both you and your dog.
